Workshop: A Faith-Based Response to Healthy Relationships. Teen Relationship Education and Empowerment (TREE) will sponsor a workshop for religious communities on Sunday and Monday, Jan. 22 & 23, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Columbia.

The workshop is open to all Boone County faith communities that wish to develop programming, especially for their youth, on teen relationship violence and healthy relationships.

Each participating community needs a team of at least two adults and two youth to help brainstorm, design, and implement programming and curricular ideas. TREE’s facilitating assistance doesn’t stop with the workshop: They can provide additional educational resources, event coordination, supplies, and space to your TREE team.

The workshop will include information on the following topics and resources:

Definitions of & statistics on teen dating violence
Health risks of teen dating violence for your youth
Relevant activities, games, and local speaker resources including the Troubling Violence Performance Project
TREE lending library resources & additional trainings
Media & performance demonstrations

Your faith community’s participation in the workshop includes these useful resources:

Binder with useful information, activity guides, and local contact information for each TREE team member
Consultation with project coordinator and TREE health service providers you will meet at the workshop
Networking opportunities with other participating religious groups and previous TREE teams

Central Missouri Stop Human Trafficking Coalition event a success

“I’m very excited about the turnout,” Coalition Co-Chair Elizabeth D’Agostino said. “I’m very excited about the response of the community, for the donations that made this event possible, and then to have so many people come and experience it. Somebody told me, ‘Oh, you deserve flowers for all the work that you’ve done.’ But to me, every person in that audience was flowers. I’m so excited that 300 people tonight learned about trafficking enough to where they could actually talk about it.”

On Sunday, September 11th the Central Missouri Stop Human Trafficking Coalition is hosting their 2nd annual Freedom by Fashion event. The event will be held in Jesse Auditorium from 5-8pm. There will be fair trade chocolate, fair trade coffee, and locally made appetizers as well as raffle prizes and a silent auction. Come see models wearing local designers and fair trade and refurbished clothing too! Tickets for adults are $23 and student tickets are $10.

‘Caring Adults = Resilient Teens’ workshop to highlight practical advice

Youth workers, clergy, teachers and others are invited to a practical workshop aimed at helping adults to better understand and address the needs of mid-Missouri teens.

“Caring Adults = Resilient Teens” is open to the public, including youth workers, clergy, faith community members, parents, caregivers and teachers.

The workshop is 5 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 28, at the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services. Limited scholarships are available to cover the $15 fee. A light supper is included in the cost.

Speakers will equip adults with practical tools to help teens become healthy and happy young adults.

The program is coordinated by the Missouri School of Religion. Co-sponsors are the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services; the MU Center on Religion & the Professions; Phoenix Programs, Inc.; the Teen Relationship Education and Empowerment project (TREE); and the Youth Community Coalition. Speakers from those groups comprise the speakers.

Teen Relationship Education and Empowerment invites you to learn more about developing youth programming — specifically tailored by you — to meet the educational and spiritual needs of your youth.

To participate, your community needs a team of at least two adults and two youth members to attend the workshop and help brainstorm, design and implement your programming.

In addition to the workshop, TREE can provide educational resources, event coordination, speakers and supplies.

The two-day workshop will be held 2-6 p.m. Sunday, April 10, and 5-9:30 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2011.

At the workshop you can learn about definitions and staistics of teen dating violence, relevant activities and speakers, TREE lending library resources and more.

Included with your participation are consultations with the project coordinator and networking opportunities with other religious groups, as well as previous TREE teams.

TREE adviser leads flash mob

M. Heather Carver, a member of TREE’s advisory committee, led a flash mob for breast cancer awareness on the MU campus in early October.

Carver is a co-founder of the Troubling Violence Performance Project, a TREE partner.

The Troubling Violence Performance Project, a TREE partner, performed Oct. 3 at Evangelical United Church of Christ and Oct. 7 at Bethel Baptist. Auditions for future performances will be held soon; more performances are planned for November and December 2010.
TREE coordinator Kim Gage Ryan will discuss TREE’s work at the annual conference of the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence in November.
A training event for new TREE teams is scheduled for March 13-14. Watch this space for more details to come.
